Garden & House Tour

We started our tour at the Walke-Enderlin-Coleman House (the old Children's Home).  I have been dying to go inside to see what had been done.  When we arrived we had to sign in because each tour was limited to 10 people which was nice.

While we waited there was a slide show and narrator which was really interesting.
We were lucky to get Kevin Coleman as our tour guide.
The House is so beautiful and the history that goes with it is fascinating.
From entry door to the next room.
The staircase up to the top floor.

The house is decorated in period pieces.

The picture below is of the painting of the house the way it was when Adm. Walke lived there.
He was an artist and more of his paintings can be seen at the Ross County Historical Society on West 5th St.

Notice under the stairs the open arch way.
This is a view from the ground level window. They are closed now.
This is now a storage area.  They think that at one time is was used for deliveries to the house.

There are several areas that have been left open to show the stone work of the house.

This is one of the original 12 pane windows in the house.

But there is so much more, we have to move on.  If you get the chance to tour the house please do, it is very interesting.

Our first garden was close by on Vine St.
Even a small area can be transformed into a magical place as this garden showed.

Then Church St.

The pond is in the front yard of the house. Make a very welcoming atmosphere.

I love Hens and Chicks and thought this very beautiful.

Then we headed to the Gazette Garden.  I had not realized they had a garden.

From the garden you can see the beautiful stained glass windows of the Church next door and their roses. Calvary Evangelical Lutheran Church.

One of the roses in the Gazette Garden which is dedicated to Larry C. Dixon, R.Ph.

Then to Second St.

The large tree is a Cottonwood.
This was a large garden with several areas.
This one with the columns was pretty.

The arbor is always a winner for me.  Wish I had room for one.  They are so romantic.

In this next picture, I fell in love with the tree in the back..a Variegated Beech tree.

The leaves are so pretty...

This yard really had the feeling of a garden from the old south.

Just the smallest thing can become a beautiful addition to a garden.

Then we headed to South Paint St.

The entrance to this garden...

Some wonderful garden art!

Here we found a wonderful display of boxwoods.
This was a more formal garden.

love statues in the garden...it gives one an object to create a story around...

Further down on S. Paint...

These Hostas were impressive.

Over in the corner....

As we continued the tour through this garden, we came upon this...

The sound of water is so relaxing. And this nice sitting area very close, so you can listen to the water falling.

I love the bark on this tree....

found another birdbath with a different use to it.

There were hugh Magnolia trees in this garden and the flowers were bigger than my hand.  This is a picture of one.

To me the flower is surrounded by the white petals....

Then to Caldwell St.....

Here we got a pleasant surprise in this garden!

And a fairy garden tucked under a Lilac bush ...it just caught my eye.

They let us go through the gate into another garden....
This is a really neat bottle bush...look closely it has leaves.

I really loved this "rock swing"....

Now to find Roberta Lane!  It was well worth the hunt....

 Two cute Fairy Houses.

I found that I could have sit in this garden and dream of Fairies and more....

I especially like her Lamb's Ear......

The potting shed was so cute!

Then to the other house on Roberta Lane.....

Over in the corner on the right side is a very interesting water feature.

Yes, I bet you know where I am going now...I have a rain chain that has never got hung and I have one of those metal frame thingy....and yes I came home and made me a neat water feature like this one!!!!  After all why visit other gardens if you can't get new ideas to brighten your own garden.... ;)

As we were leaving ....don't those two ladies look familiar!!!????  My friends, Pam and Diana, looking at the Variegated Beech trees....they fell in love with them too...

now to Commanche Rd....

Zinnias in a container!  I will have to try that...I love Zinnias.

This raised vegetable garden was neat.

Finally only one stop left, it is 4:30pm...and it is Adena...
So up we went and only had about 20 minutes.....

On the drive up the hill, we saw a Northern Flicker.

Some Donkeys and horses.

and the Camel!

He gave me a profile shot!

View of the House from the garden.....

The Hollyhocks were beautiful!  They were ruffled, I had never seen that kind before.

The sun dial...

Sun Dial is telling us our time is up!

My Sister, Lannette...

Squirrel we saw on our way out.

Me in front of Adena.....

I hope you enjoyed the tour.  There was so much more I could have shared but it would take way to long....It doesn't cost anything to walk around the Adena gardens and grounds.
I discovered some new plants and love to see how different gardens tell different stories.  Have to go now...finish working on my garden...(which is never done).

PS....Here are two of the items I saw in the tour that I have added to my yard!

Till next time!
